European Union denounces Afzal’s execution
AGENCIES
Brussels, Feb 12: Denouncing the execution hanging of Afzal Guru, European Union Tuesday reiterated the bloc’s firm opposition to the death penalty irrespective of the seriousness of the crimes committed by the convicted prisoners.
“While recognizing that terrible murders were committed at the heart of this case and aware of the suffering of the victims and their families, the EU reiterates its principled opposition to the death penalty under all circumstances and calls on India to re-establish a moratorium on executions, in line with the global trend towards the abolition of capital punishment,” EU’s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement.
EU’s top diplomat added that the European bloc continues to “support India in the fight against terrorism and look forward to continuing to work together in this area.”
