Police, CRPF lock horns over Watergam incident

Sahai Asks Cops To Exercise Restraint

Srinagar, Feb 13: Inspector General of paramilitary CRPF, SS Sandhu on Wednesday said that Watergam firing incident, in which a youth was killed earlier this week, is being portrayed in a “wrong way.” Meanwhile, IGP Kashmir S M Sahai asked forces personnel to exercise restraint while dealing with protesters.
Talking to Greater Kashmir IG CRPF without naming anybody said, “Investigations in Watergam incident will reveal who are other people involved in the incident.”
“CRPF men were assisting the police,” he added.
A police spokesman said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, S M Sahai has directed the forces personnel on ground to exercise maximum restraint so that fatalities are avoided.
Sources said after the Watergamincident the IGP Kashmir wrote to the CRPF top brass asking them to ensure that forces personnel being deployed in the Valley should not carry firearms.
The IG CRPF said they have been asked to carry the equipments used in dealing with law and order. “We have been asked to carry out riot gears like shields and lathis.”
However, Sandhu said, “The directions about not to carry firearms during law and order situation are in place since years, but whenever the situation demands, the arms can be made available.”
