Mian Qayoom regains Bar presidency
‘My priority will be to take ongoing movement forward’

Srinagar, Sep 5: Kashmir High Court Bar Association Thursday elected its new executive body with Advocate Main Abdul Qayoom as its president.
After the counting process was concluded in the evening at Sadder Court Complex here, Election Commissioner of HCBA, Advocate Syed Manzoor, declared the results.
Advocate Qayoom won over his rival candidate Advocate G N Shaheen by a margin of 221 votes. Qayoom got 398 votes of the total polled 583 votes. Eight votes were rejected.
In a triangular contest for the post of vice-president with advocates Bashir Ahmad Dar and Mushtaq Ahmad Pandit, Advocate Aijaz Bedar was declared successful.
Out of the 586 votes polled, Bedar bagged 353, Bashir Ahmad Dar secured 169 votes while Advocate Mushtaq Ahmad Pandit got 60 votes. Four votes were rejected.
Advocate Muhammad Ashraf Bhat won over Advocate Majid Jahangir by a margin of 233 votes and was elected general secretary for the Bar. Bhat bagged 404 votes out of 586 votes polled while Jahangir secured 171 votes. Eleven votes were rejected.
There was a direct contest between Advocate Aijaz Ahmad Dar and Anwar-ul-Islam Shaheen for the post of joint secretary. Shaheen won over Dar by a margin of 195 votes. Out of the total polled 583 votes, Shaheen got 385 while Dar secured 190. Eight votes were rejected.
Advocate Bilal Ahmad Wani was elected as Treasurer as he won over Advocate Sheikh Haroon Rashid by a margin of 219 votes. Out of total polled 585 votes, Wani secured 398 votes while Sheikh got 179. Eight votes were rejected.
Advocate Mian Qayoom took over from former president Advocate Zafar Qureshi. Qayoom has remained Bar president in past also.
After being elected as president of Bar Association for one-year term, Qayoom said, “My utmost priority will be that we will strive for taking the ongoing freedom movement to its logical end. We will do whatever we have to do for this, whether it is organizing of conferences, protesting on the roads, to file petitions in the Courts, to visit detainees and under-trials or to visit the leaders of the same ideology as reflected in the Constitution of Bar.”
“I assure you, we will do it. We will achieve the objective whether we die or survive,” he declared.
In his address, vice-president Advocate Reyaz Bedar said he would work for upholding the Constitution of Bar.
General secretary Muhammad Ashraf Bhat said he would work for accomplishing the unfinished agenda of the HCBA.
Advocate G N Shaheen in his speech congratulated the newly elected president of HCBA and accepted the decision of the lawyers.
