It all began with Gaffar Shah, who founded the shop and laid the foundation for what would become a thriving business. His son, Ali Shah, continued his legacy, expanding the shop’s offerings and solidifying its reputation for quality and reliability.
Yousuf Shah, the shop’s next steward, further enhanced its standing, catering to a growing clientele and adapting to changing times. And now, Nazir Ahmad Shah, the fourth-generation owner, carries the torch forward, preserving the shop’s rich heritage while embracing modernity.
Shah Sons’ shop is not just a store; it’s a hub of commerce in Zaina Kadal. With a wide range of products including wedding items, disposables, dry fruits, and spices, the shop caters to the diverse needs of its customers.”We’re not just known in Zaina Kadal; our customers come from all over Kashmir and even from different parts of India. It feels good to know that our shop is trusted and loved by so many people, near and far,” he added.
For Nazir Ahmad Shah, the shop is more than just a business – it’s a way of life. Despite holding a BA degree and the option of pursuing government jobs, he chooses to honour his family’s legacy by continuing to run the shop. “Our shop is not just about selling goods; it’s about carrying forward our family’s history and values. I could have chosen a different path, but I feel a deep connection to this place and its legacy. Every day, I’m reminded of the responsibility I have to uphold the trust and respect our ancestors have earned over the years,” he added.
Besides managing the shop, Nazir Ahmad Shah has been the President of the Shehr-e-Khass Trader’s Alliance for 18 years. This shows not just his business skills but also how much he cares about the local community and making sure it does well. By leading the Alliance, he works to make things better for everyone in the area, showing his commitment to their success and growth.
As Shah Sons’ shop celebrates its 161st year, Nazir Ahmad Shah is determined to keep it successful. He wants to adjust to how the market changes but still hold onto what makes the shop special: offering good products, being honest, and making sure customers are happy.
