Srinagar, Aug 27: The annual Cocoon Auction Market for Kashmir Division commenced today at the Sericulture Complex in Srinagar. Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, Director of Sericulture J&K, inaugurated the event, attended by department officials, cocoon growers, and buyers from local and outside regions.

The market aims to ensure fair returns for cocoon growers. Over the coming days, silkworm rearers from Srinagar, Pattan, Sonawari, and Budgam districts will sell their produce here. Similar markets will be organized across Kashmir Division to provide doorstep auction facilities.

Bhat emphasised the department’s commitment to facilitating favorable pricing for farmers and highlighted plans to establish more silkworm reeling units across Jammu & Kashmir. “We aim to boost local silk industry consumption, ensuring better returns for our farmers,” he stated.

The auction market is expected to enhance cocoon growers’ income through competitive bidding. It’s part of the Sericulture Department’s strategy to strengthen the sector by increasing production, improving quality, and ensuring economic well-being of silkworm rearers.

Participants expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and hoped for high returns. Buyers noted significant improvements in cocoon quality and quantity this year.

The event was attended by various department officials, including the Additional Director of Sericulture Development Department, Kashmir, and District Sericulture Officers from multiple regions.
