A Stunning Site

One of the lesser-known trekking destinations in the Kashmir Valley is Zaloora Hilltop, located in Zaloora village in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Archaeological findings suggest that this area was once home to fishermen, and the name “Zaloora” is derived from “Zaal,” meaning fisherman’s net.

However, Mohammad ud Din Foaq in “Tareekh i Aqwami Kashmir” claims that Zaloora, like Soura, has Hebrew origins. Besides its historical significance, Zaloora is famous for its Sufi saints and intellectuals and in recent years it has gained recognition as a stunning trekking site. Located 16 km from the apple town of Sopore towards Kupwara district, Zaloora offers an adventurous trekking experience.

I recently visited Zaloora Hilltop, which is an absolute must-visit for hikers and trekkers. This beautiful village is surrounded by the Pir Panjal range on three sides and “lal koul” on the northern side. Zaloora Hilltop is perfect for testing one’s trekking skills, offering exciting elements to satisfy nature lovers’ adventurous spirits. Nestled among evergreen conifers, this trekking spot is landlocked by the picturesque Lolab Valley, revealing its secrets to those who explore it.

Zaloora Hilltop represents the ultimate beauty of this village, offering mesmerizing views that are simply breathtaking. The trek feels like walking through nature’s artwork, with dense forests and murmuring streams providing a panoramic view as you ascend. If you’re in the mood for a thrilling trekking expedition, you shouldn’t miss this village with its stunning hilltop. The green meadows, calm forests, and bracing climate are exactly what nature lovers seek to explore.

During the peak of the Buddhist era in Kashmir, Zaloora was home to Bodvihar, making it a place of religion and learning. In the reign of Zain-ul-Abidin, a prominent Sufi saint of the indigenous Reshi movement, Hazrat Haji Lolo Reshi Baba Saeb (RA), settled in this village. Though records about this mystic are scarce, the hilltop’s stunning beauty is captivating.

This trek is known as a short-altitude trek that offers spectacular views of Baramulla and Kupwara districts. As you progress, you might spot rare birds singing and fluttering. The trek provides extraordinary opportunities for photographers to capture the beauty of nature. Despite the uphill journey, the trek is not very difficult, encouraging trekkers to push their limits while experiencing the changing weather at high altitudes. From the hilltop, one can view the enchanting Lolab Valley. Camping under the stars on this hilltop in summer is a memorable experience.

This lesser-known trekking site has many hidden treasures. Those ready to embrace adventure should plan a visit. The trail leads to mountainous villages like Yamberzalwar and Daroosa Lolab, with paths laden with green terrains and abundant wildlife. This trek offers a serene atmosphere and harmonious ambiance, making it a must-visit for adventure lovers.

Don’t let the summer months pass without visiting this trekking spot in north Kashmir.
