Missing labouer’s body retrieved

Sonamarg, June 3:  The body of a missing local labourer, who disappeared after falling into a snow cavity due to the breakdown of a portion of Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg hill station on Sunday, was recovered by rescue teams on Monday.

Two tourists were rescued soon after the incident on Sunday.  The rescue operation resumed Monday morning with the participation of local volunteers, SDRF, Police, Tourism Police, and Army to locate the missing labourer.

   

The body of the missing sledge rider was retrieved from the snow cavity on Monday.

Officials identified the deceased as Manzoor Ahmad Khan, 18, son of Muhammad Yousuf Khan of Haknar Gund.

The body has been shifted to Public Health Centre Sonamarg for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the family.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident.

Notably, this is the second such incident in less than 10 days.

On May 25, a tourist from Maharashtra was killed while his wife got injured when the duo accidentally fell into a snow cavity after a portion of a glacier broke down near Thajiwas Glacier.

Meanwhile, the frequent occurrence of such incidents has caused concern and locals have urged the administration to take measures to avoid such tragic incidents in future so that no human lives are lost.
