Joggers irked over unattended garbage dump, dog menace at Khanpora

Baramulla, May 26:   The residents of north Kashmir’s Baramulla town are increasingly concerned over a large garbage dump located on the Baramulla-Uri highway at Khanpora.

This spot has not only become an eyesore but has also turned into a haven for stray dogs, causing severe inconvenience and fear among local residents, particularly morning joggers.

The road along the River Jehlum, a popular route for morning jogging , especially among women, has become almost inaccessible due to the mounting trash. The pungent smell emanating from the garbage is unbearable, and the area has attracted a significant number of stray dogs.

“This situation poses a threat to the safety of those who use this route for their daily exercise and commuting,” said Arshad Bhat, a local resident.

The locals said that the problem has escalated over the past several weeks. They said despite numerous complaints to local authorities, the garbage piles continue to grow, and with it, the number of stray dogs. The fear of dog attacks is now a daily concern for locals here.

Fayaz Ahmad, a regular jogger from Khanpora, while expressing his concern said, “The smell is horrendous, and I constantly fear for my safety due to the dogs. We can’t jog here anymore.”

“The spot is used by the garbage dumping vehicles of the municipal council Baramulla,” he added.

Similarly, Naseema , another local resident, said “This road was a favourite place for my morning walks. Now, it’s terrifying. The dogs are aggressive, and the stench is unbearable. It’s affecting our health and peace of mind.”

The accumulated garbage is not only a breeding ground for stray dogs but also poses significant health risks. The foul odour has potential air and soil contamination, which could lead to respiratory issues among the residents. Moreover, the presence of dogs increases the risk of attacks and the spread of diseases.

The concerned residents have appealed to the authorities to take immediate action to clear the garbage dump so that residents of the area can walk freely on this road. They have also urged for measures to control the stray dog population to ensure the safety of the common people.

“We need the authorities to step in and address this issue urgently,” said Farooq Ahmad of Khanpora Baramulla.  “This is not just about inconvenience; it’s about our health and safety, “he added.
