Need to prevent Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in J&K: Chief Secretary

Srinagar, June 24: J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Monday emphasized the need for thorough studies of glacial lakes to prevent disasters like Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in Jammu and Kashmir.

He directed the department of Disaster Management to form a team of experts, including glaciologists, to conduct expeditions to these lakes and provide practical recommendations based on ground reality.

   

The team will assess the lakes and install Early Warning Systems, Auto Weather Stations, and collect data to develop a comprehensive mitigation plan against GLOF, said an official communique from the Information department.

A detailed project worth Rs 30 crore has been submitted to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for funding, it read.

The Chief Secretary stressed the importance of serious and timely action to evade such disasters and ensure the safety of the region.

The meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including experts from universities, research institutions, and government departments
