Srinagar, Aug 06: The Group of Concerned Citizens( GCC) J&K , a non-political civil society collective of former civil servants, academics, advocates, retired judges, medicos and engineers , has appealed for clearance of solid waste.

It called upon the government to ensure that no solid waste is left behind on the Yatra routes and adjoining areas. In a statement, the GCC Secretary Mohammad Rafi said GCC focussed on the need to protect all water bodies on the Yatra routes from solid waste contamination and pollution and to protect the rare flora and fauna in the mountain system on both routes. ” All solid waste left behind by Yatris, people on Yatra duty, labourers etc should be collected and brought down for appropriate disposal in land fills and by recycling,” he said.

The GCC also appealed to the local population living downstream of Lidder upto Pahalgam – Khanabal area and of Baltal – Sonamarg-Ganderbal, besides the stretch upto Sumbal (where Sindh meets Jehlum), to lend a helping hand to the local administration in this cause by carrying out solid waste removal measures, on a voluntary basis and in an organised manner, in the best spirit of service to society.
