Acute water scarcity hits Handwara area

Kupwara, June 1: Residents of Zahid Colony in Kulangam Handwara have been grappling with a severe shortage of drinking water for the past 10 days, leading to significant distress and inconvenience. The situation has left many households struggling to secure even the most basic necessity for their daily lives.

The crisis has been particularly pronounced over the last week. According to local residents, the Jal Shakti Department did dispatch a water tanker seven days ago, but since then, no additional supply has been provided. This single tanker was insufficient to meet the needs of the entire colony, exacerbating the dire situation.

One resident, while speaking about the ordeal, expressed his frustration and helplessness. “We received one water tanker seven days back, and since then, we have had no further supply. We have repeatedly brought this issue to the attention of the authorities, but our pleas seem to fall on deaf ears,” he lamented.

The lack of a consistent water supply has forced many families to find alternative and often inadequate sources of water, which poses potential health risks. The residents’ repeated appeals to the Jal Shakti Department and other concerned authorities have so far yielded no tangible results, leaving them in a state of despair.

The residents of Zahid Colony are urging the authorities to take immediate and effective action to resolve this pressing issue. Meanwhile the residents urged the authorities to dispatch water tankers on a regular basis till heat waves halt.
