Srinagar, Aug 07: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a series of search and seizure operations at four locations in the Kashmir Valley today. The raids, carried out in collaboration with the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology Department of J&K government, targeted businesses violating quality control orders and BIS regulations.
According to the official statement, at the Diamond Grinding Media Industry, a large quantity of iron ingots was seized for violating Quality Control Order (QCO). Bala Jewelers in Downtown Srinagar faced confiscation of jewelry without BIS hallmarks. Another operation was conducted at Hari Singh High Street in Srinagar. At Kashmir Glass in Khonmoh, a substantial amount of iron toughened glass was seized for QCO violations.
The BIS Jammu & Kashmir Branch Office is initiating action against the offenders under the Bureau of Indian Standard Act, 2016. Violations of sections 11, 14(6), 14(8), 15, and 17 of the Act are punishable with up to one year imprisonment, a minimum fine of Rs. 1 Lakh, or both.
BIS officials warn that fake ISI-marked and hallmarked products are often sold to consumers for large profits. The public is urged to verify the authenticity of Standards Marks on products through the BIS website or BIS Care App before making purchases.
