Anantnag, Aug 27: Senior Congress leader G A Mir today said that BJP is stifling democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.

He was talking to media after filing nomination papers from dooru assembly constituency. “The current dispensation deprived Jammu and Kashmir of democratic process for the last 10 years. The designs of the current government in New Delhi are to suppress democracy and that is why for the last 10 years no elections took place in Jammu and Kashmir,” Mir said.

He said that not only the aspiring candidates, but also the people were waiting for this moment. “They were feeling suffocated and now under the pressure from the Supreme Court, the Central government was compelled to conduct the elections,” he said.

Mir said that the elections are a crucial ingredient of democracy. Criticising the BJP’s government’s decision of scrapping the special constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir, he said that the August 5 decision was taken by suppressing the people and keeping them in the dark.

“Such methods have never been used in any democracy,” the Congress leader said.

Mir said that Congress made efforts to brought all the political parties and individuals together to fight against the repression of the BJP. “Now, who has responded to such efforts, you will come to know about it in the coming days,” he said. Mir said that there is no threat of direct BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. “However, the people have to recognize those who are indirectly connected to it,” he said.

Mir said that the NC-Congress alliance, supported by other parties, fielded candidates on the basis of merit and feedback from the ground.
