Gulmarg goes beyond the slopes

Gulmarg, Feb 24: Gulmarg ski resort is not only attracting adventure enthusiasts with its snow-covered slopes but also buzzing with recreational events due to the proactive efforts of the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA).

From captivating musical evening events to the celebration of religious festivals, GDA is leaving no stone unturned to enchant both tourists and local visitors alike.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) GDA Wasim Raja said the musical events not only serve as a source of entertainment but also provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talent, earning a livelihood in the process.

“One of the standout attractions this season is the revival of heli-skiing after a hiatus of around 5 years. This thrilling activity has become a major attraction here,” he told Greater Kashmir.

To foster a sense of community and inclusivity, GDA recently organised the Lohri festival and Christmas, with tourists actively participating and expressing elation at the initiative.

“The festive celebrations contributed to the vibrant atmosphere, leaving a lasting impression on the visitors,” Raja said.

Beyond event management, GDA has embarked on initiatives to enhance the overall tourist experience. The registration of ponywallas has commenced to ensure that only authorised operators ply their trade in the area, ensuring both safety and fairness.

“Simultaneously, the GDA is undertaking rigorous efforts to maintain Gulmarg as a polythene-free zone, conducting awareness campaigns to ensure the successful implementation of this eco-friendly initiative,” Raja said.

Also, the GDA hosted an ecotourism conclave in Gulmarg, bringing together renowned legal and environmental experts, tourism stakeholders, service providers, and heads of travel bodies.

“The conclave aimed at fostering dialogue and collaboration for the responsible and eco-conscious development of tourism in the region,” Raja said.

He said that the musical events and other activities were currently put on hold as the entire focus had shifted to the 4th Khelo India Winter Games, which would conclude on February 25, 2024.

“Once the winter games are over, we will again start our recreational activities to keep this tourist destination abuzz for the tourists,” he said.
