Uri, June 24: Locals of Garkote village of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district visited the Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) Uri office demanding the restoration of Lagama-Garkote road for heavy vehicular movement (HVM).

A delegation of local residents headed by a local Manzoor Ahmad Khawaja Ganaie visited the SDM office, seeking redressal to their problem.

They met the officials of the SDM office who assured them that this issue has been taken up with the higher ups and will be resolved on priority.

The road has been closed for heavy vehicles for the last two months due to a portion being washed away by the landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Lagama area. Locals including women, students and elderly people are facing multiple issues due to its closure for the heavy vehicles.

“We have demanded that a chinar tree on the stretch should be axed immediately so that a concrete road can be constructed for the heavy vehicles,” the delegation said. “If a fresh spell of rain happens, it will wash away the road completely,” they added.
