Access Providers block 50 entities for spamming calls after TRAI order

New Delhi, Sep 03: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has observed an increase in spam calls, with over 7.9 lakh complaints lodged against Unregistered Telemarketers (UTMs) in the first half of 2024.

In response to this growing menace and complaints from the consumers, TRAI issued strict directives to Access Providers on August 13, 2024, aimed at curbing the surge in spam communications.

Under these new directives, Access Providers have been instructed to immediately stop promotional voice calls originating from unregistered telemarketers or senders using telecom resources such as SIP, PRI, or other channels.

TRAI has warned that any UTM found exploiting these resources will face severe penalties, including disconnection of all telecom services for up to two years and blacklisting.

In compliance with these orders, Access Providers have implemented stringent measures, resulting in the blacklisting of over 50 entities and the disconnection of more than 2.75 lakh SIP DID/Mobile Numbers/Telecom resources.

TRAI continues to urge all stakeholders to adhere to the issued directives and actively participate in creating a cleaner and more efficient telecom environment.
