Power Point presentation made on solid waste management

Earlier, on 30 October 2018, the High Court had asked the Chief Secretary to allow members of EPG to give a presentation on solid waste management.

The Environmental Policy Group (EPG) gave a Power Point presentation to Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam at Civil Secretariat Jammu on Solid Waste Management Strategy, 2017. 

Earlier, on 30 October 2018, the High Court had asked the Chief Secretary to allow members of EPG to give a presentation on solid waste management. 

Recently, the government through Housing & Urban Development Department (HUDD) had sought suggestions/views from the stakeholders on the state policy on Solid Waste Management Strategy, 2017, and Draft Action Plan for Municipal Solid Waste Management J&K. 

Financial Commissioner Housing & Urban Development K B Aggarwal, Commissioner Forest & Environment Manij Divedi, Secretary Planning H&UDD Ashfaq Ahmad, Director Local Bodies and other senior officers were present on the occasion. 

On behalf of the EPG, the presentation was given by its Governing Council Members Syed Nassarullah Shah and Dr M M Shuja assisted by RTI activist Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat. 

On the occasion, the state policy on solid waste management was also discussed.

It may be mentioned, the government had issued a notification on 4 October wherein the Draft Action Plan for Municipal Solid Waste Management J&K-2018 was prepared in pursuance to Solid Waste Management rules, (SWM 2016 ) Rule 5. 

The draft Action Plan was kept available on the department’s website http.jkhudd.gov.in. 

The public at large and the concerned stakeholders were requested to visit the department’s website and furnish suggestions/comments within 30 days from the date of issuance of notice so that the Action Plan could be finalized. 

During the meeting members of EPG led by Syed Nasarullah apprised the Chief Secretary that people are not able to find any address or email ID after opening the draft action from HUDD website, where they could send their comments.

During the meeting the Chief Secretary assured the EPG members that the government will ensure to institutionalize the waste management work in J&K, a statement here said. 

Pertinently J&K High Court on 30 October had directed the state government to submit status report on draft action plan for Solid Waste Management (SWM) bylaws.
