Remembering My Father | Always lost in high thinking

Life was long and painful for him, but he never lost hope. Late Raja Nazir Ahmad, my father, left for his final abode on June 17, 2024. He was an ardent admirer of Dr Sir Mohammad Iqbal, and his conversations were often interspersed with couplets from Iqbal’s poetry. My father would encourage us by saying, “Nahīñ terā nasheman qasr-e-sultānī ke gumbad par / Tū shāhīñ hai baserā kar pahādoñ kī chatānoñ meñ” urging them to aim high and live simply. He also insisted on simplicity with, “Sannat pe ho farefta aalam agar tamam, haan saadgi se apni rahiyo na baaz tu,” emphasising the importance of maintaining simplicity in a world obsessed with grandeur.

At other times, he would get lost in divine thoughts, murmuring, “Tu Hai Muheet-e-Bekaran, Mein Hun Zara Si Aabjoo / Ya Mujhe Hamkinar Kar Ya Mujhe Bekinar Kar” These lines reflected his deep spiritual connection and his quest for divine guidance. An avid reader, he could finish a book effortlessly within a few weeks. His love for reading was well-known, and it inspired many around him to take up reading as well.

Fate had harsh winds of tribulations in store for him. Despite the many challenges he faced, he stood like a strong shield, protecting his family. No tribulation, not even severe second-stage stomach malignancy, could break his spirit. He battled his illness with incredible strength and resilience, never letting it dampen his will to live or his hope for the future.

He was a father who nurtured his kids all alone, fulfilling the role of both mother and father. His dedication and love for his children knew no bounds. He was always there to guide, support, and encourage them, ensuring they had everything they needed to grow and succeed. He was a brother who supported his siblings through thick and thin, always standing by them in times of need. He was also a son-in-law who supported his in-laws’ family, earning their love and respect through his unwavering support and kindness.

His love and compassion touched many families. He was known for his generosity and willingness to help others, often going out of his way to support those in need. His kindness and compassion left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him and his legacy of love and support will continue to inspire us all.

A special thanks to Dr Sheikh Aijaz, the renowned oncologist, who treated him like a father rather than just a patient for almost two decades. Dr Aijaz’s care and dedication made a significant difference in his life, providing him with the best possible treatment and support.

I thank all the people, family, friends, and colleagues who have been a source of support throughout this difficult time and who stood by us in this hour of grief. Your kindness and support have been a great comfort to us, and we are deeply grateful.
