Budgam, Aug 12: ECC Kheerigund emerged victorious in the inaugural Doodh Ganga Premier League (DPL) tournament, defeating Jedden Cricket Club by 11 runs in a nail-biting final at Rangwari cricket ground, Kutbal Chadoora, on Sunday.

The grand finale drew a large crowd of spectators. Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat, Social Activist and Chairman of J&K RTI Movement, presided as chief guest and presented trophies to the winning and runner-up teams. In his address, Dr Bhat commended both teams while emphasizing the importance of balancing sports with education and career pursuits.

“While passion for cricket is admirable, it’s crucial to focus on studies and secure your future. I’ve seen many passionate cricketers struggle without jobs even in their 40s. Strive for a balance between your love for the game and building a stable livelihood,” Dr Bhat advised.

ECC Kheerigund, batting first, set a formidable target of 206/7 in 20 overs. Showket top-scored with 78 runs, while Abbas Wani contributed a quick-fire 56 off just 17 balls. JCC Jedden fought valiantly in their chase, with Ajaz Dar’s stellar 87-run knock, but fell short by 11 runs.

Abbas Wani was named Player of the Match, while Ajaz Dar received the Player of the Series award. Khurshid Hitmat was recognized as the Best Wicketkeeper, and Iqbal Rather claimed the Best Bowler title.

Notable attendees included Dr Rouf Mohiudeen (Director, Koshish NGO), Shahnawaz Sultan (Chairman, Khyber Girls School Chadoora), Advocate Nazir Ahmad, and social activist Mushtaq Ahmad Lone. Residents from Kutbal, Bonen, Surasyar, Gogjipathri, and surrounding areas also witnessed the exciting finale.
