J&K Fencers dominate Khelo India University Games in Guwahati

Srinagar, Feb 27: Fencers from Jammu and Kashmir dominated the individual fencing events at the Khelo India University Games in Guwahati, winning 5 medals – 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.

Amit Chib clinched the gold medal in the Men’s Sabre event in style, defeating all his opponents convincingly on his way to the top of the podium. This is Chib’s first major gold medal at the national university level. In the Men’s Epee event, Sufiyan Wahid put up a spirited performance to bag the silver medal, losing narrowly to Maharashtra’s Rohan Kokane in the final. Wahid’s silver takes J&K’s medal tally to 2. Riya Bakshi added to J&K’s medal haul, winning the silver medal in the Women’s Foil event. Though Bakshi went down fighting in the gold medal match, her silver medal is a testament to her immense talent with the foil.

   

Rishika Khajuria, representing Guru Nanak Dev University, won the bronze medal in the Women’s Sabre event. Khajuria overcame stiff competition to stand on the podium. The final medal for J&K came through Yuvraj Singh Chandel aka Yuvi from Gurukashi University, who won the bronze medal in the Men’s Sabre event.
