Srinagar, Feb 21: For nearly a century, Maqbool Shah Ghulam Hassan (Bedaba’s) has been a fixture in the bustling downtown of Srinagar.
Founded in 1927 by Maqbool Shah, this beloved shop is known far and wide for its fine fabrics and vibrant dyes.
Generations of Kashmiris have frequented Bedaba’s to purchase the shop’s exquisite pashmina shawls, elegant carpets, and richly patterned fabrics.
Now in its 97th year, Maqbool Shah Ghulam Hassan continues the tradition of excellence in textiles and craftsmanship that has made it an institution in Old Srinagar. Much has changed over the decades, but Bedaba’s commitment to quality and service remains constant, a reassuring symbol of heritage in a rapidly modernising world.
The shelves are lined with bolts of fabric, each one telling a story of craftsmanship and artistry. The air is filled with the scent of dyes, a reminder of the shop’s commitment to quality and tradition.

Bedaba’s has a rich history spanning four generations. Founded by Maqbool Shah, the shop is now run by his great-grandson, Omer Ganee.
Omer follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, Ghulam Hassan, and his father, Muzzafar Jan Ganee, who have all played pivotal roles in preserving and enriching Bedabas’ legacy.
Omer Ganee said, “This shop is not just a business but a continuation of his family’s heritage. As I carry forward the legacy of my forefathers, we have all kinds of fabric for both men and women in our shop. During wedding season, our shop is really busy because people come to us for their special outfits. And in winter, our customers love buying the traditional Kashmiri pheran from us.”
“As more shops similar to our business emerged, our business adapted to meet the changing needs of its customers. We began offering tailoring services and customisation options, including intricate tila work, to provide a more personalised experience. This move not only helped us stand out in a competitive market but also strengthened our bond with customers, who appreciated the attention to detail and the opportunity to create unique garments tailored to their preferences.” he added
Bedaba’s started with just 2 or 3 workers, but as the business grew, so did the team. Now, Maqbool Shah Ghulam Hassan (Bedaba’s) has around 15 workers, including many educated youth from the area. By providing employment opportunities to these young individuals, Bedaba’s not only empowers them but also enriches its workforce with fresh ideas and perspectives.
The expansion of Bedaba’s team reflects its commitment to supporting the local community and providing growth opportunities. Each worker plays a vital role in maintaining the shop’s reputation for quality and customer service.
