New Delhi, Dec 8: The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed concern about a “gap” between Israel’s stated intention to protect civilians and the unfolding reality of the war in Gaza. Blinken emphasised the importance of Israel prioritising the protection of civilians in its operations against Hamas.
US officials conveyed a message to Israel, urging restraint and emphasizing the high number of Palestinian civilian casualties resulting from the operations in northern Gaza.
After a meeting with the UK’s Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, Secretary Blinken publicly criticized Israel’s handling of the conflict, stating, “It remains imperative that Israel put a premium on civilian protection.”
Israel contends that it is taking measures to minimize harm to civilians, but recent days have seen a significant number of casualties, including in areas previously designated as safe.
The United Nations Security Council is set to convene on Friday to vote on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The United Arab Emirates has proposed a draft resolution, following Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s rare move of invoking Article 99 of the UN’s charter to address threats to international peace and security.
UN Humanitarian Chief Martin Griffiths highlighted the dire situation in southern Gaza, stating that the Israeli military offensive has left no safe place for aid agencies.
The UN’s humanitarian program in Gaza is now described as “no longer a functioning one,” with increased risks to humanitarian deliveries.
Griffiths also called attention to the destruction of Gaza’s health system, warning of the potential for widespread diseases among the population. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have fled to Rafah near the Egyptian border due to intense fighting in Khan Younis.
Reports indicate fires in the Jabalia refugee camp, where Israeli tanks have deployed smoke and firebombs. The Israeli army continues its offensive in northern Gaza, advancing toward the centre of the camp.
In addition to the humanitarian crisis, the cost of essential commodities in Gaza has surged, making it difficult for many residents to afford groceries. Hamas reported the death of an Israeli soldier during a clash with its fighters, who were allegedly conducting a rescue operation.
The situation remains tense, with ongoing hostilities, a humanitarian crisis, and international efforts to secure a ceasefire in the region.
