New Delhi, Jan 8: Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, embarked on his initial state visit to China on Monday, marking a significant or controversial diplomatic move since assuming office in November. The couple received a warm welcome from senior Chinese officials upon their arrival in Xiamen, Fujian province.
During the visit, the Maldives and China are set to engage in official talks and sign pivotal agreements aimed at enhancing trade, professional collaboration, and socioeconomic development in the Maldives.
Maldives President is scheduled to meet with top Chinese leadership, attend the Invest Maldives Forum, and hold discussions with senior Chinese business leaders to foster mutual collaborations in investments and trade. The visit, slated to conclude on Friday, includes a high-level delegation, including government ministers.
This marks President Muizzu’s third foreign visit since taking office, with earlier visits to Turkey and the UAE. The sequence of foreign visits, deviating from the tradition of the Maldivian leaders making India their first foreign stop, has sparked speculation about the evolving dynamics of the Maldives’ foreign policy.
Traditionally, Maldivian leaders have initiated their foreign visits with India, given its proximity and historical ties. However, President Muizzu’s decision to visit China first has led to speculation about potential shifts in the traditional India-Maldives relationship. India, being the nearest neighbour to the Maldives, has historically been a crucial ally, offering support during times of stress or need.
