KU clarifies stand on SSM College students registration row

Srinagar April 14: The Kashmir University (KU) has clarified its stand regarding the issue about removal of registration of SSM college students which came to limelight few days ago.

In a handout issued here, the university has stated that SSM college admitted students under the NRI Quota for the 2021 batch in violation of SRO 396.

“In response to this violation, the university provisionally allowed the registration of these students. However, the college continued to make unauthorised admissions under the NRI Quota in subsequent years despite clear communication about the violation of SRO 396 and the illegality of such admissions,” the KU handout reads.

The handout reads that to address the issue and prioritise students’ interests, the university formed a committee to recommend appropriate actions while ensuring adherence to the rule of law.

“The committee proposed a one-time concession to confirm the registration of students admitted under the NRI quota from 2021-22, subject to approval from relevant authorities,” the handout reads.

Despite these efforts, the KU authorities have stated that the college has yet to comply with the committee’s recommendations, including necessary formalities for registration and examinations.

“The university emphasizes its commitment to a fair admission process and equal opportunities for all students, awaiting the college’s compliance to conduct examinations promptly once formalities are completed,” the KU handout reads.
