Srinagar, Apr 21: Residents of several areas in the summer capital find themselves grappling with severe waterlogging issues as a result of inadequate drainage infrastructure.
Areas such as Rajbagh, Natipora, Rambagh, Chanapora, Jawahar Nagar, Khanyar, Nowpora, Sonwar, Safa Kadal and Hyderpora have been particularly hard-hit, with roads and residential lanes submerged in knee-deep water, causing immense inconvenience to residents and commuters alike.
“It’s a recurring nightmare that we’ve been dealing with for years. The authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to our plight. A few hours of rain, and our entire neighborhood gets submerged, making it nearly impossible to go about our daily lives,” said Majeed Ahmad, a resident of Tajudin Colony Natipora.
The lack of effective drainage infrastructure has left residents frustrated, with many criticizing the local authorities for neglecting the area’s drainage system for far too long.
“It’s time the authorities prioritize the drainage problems in these areas, which have long been plagued by waterlogging issues during heavy rainfall,” said another resident of Rambagh.
Locals have lamented that the flooded streets have severely restricted their movement, with many refraining from using their vehicles due to the inundated roads.
The faulty drainage system has further exacerbated the situation, with several streets filled with knee-deep water, posing hazards to pedestrians and commuters alike.
The ongoing smart city works have also been blamed for exacerbating the waterlogging issues in many areas, as roads continue to be dug up and repaired, leading to further disruptions and inconvenience for residents.
SE Drainage, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Sajad Kawoosa told Greater Kashmir that they will look into the matter.
“We are providing all the basic facilities to the people like drainage , dewatering in different areas, especially in rainfall. But we will consider the cases where people lack drainage facilities,” he said.
