Srinagar, Apr 29 : The School Education Department (SED) Monday ordered the suspension of class work in all government and private schools for all classes on Tuesday (April 30) in the wake of incessant rains that wreaked havoc across Kashmir.

The order in this regard was issued by the Director of School Education Kashmir Tasaduq Hussain Mir “as a precautionary measure” to safeguard the lives of the students.

“Given the inclement weather conditions and the incessant rains, it is hereby ordered that class work in all government and private educational institutions up to the higher secondary level of Kashmir division will remain suspended on April 30 as a precautionary measure,” the order reads.

The decision to suspend the class work in all schools on Tuesday (April 30) was taken after the premises of several schools were inundated while some schools in north Kashmir parts were completely submerged in the wake of the incessant rainfall across Kashmir.

Several schools in north Kashmir’s Handwara area were seen completely submerged in the water which accumulated following the incessant rains.  The staff members of the school were seen shifting the school records and other valuable documents to other places. The class work in schools had already remained suspended on Monday in various parts of Kashmir given the incessant rains and waterlogging.

The class work remained suspended in Kupwara schools given the inclement weather and avalanche warning issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA).

The schools were also closed in Doda and Ramban while classwork remained suspended in Gurez Valley as well.

The administration in Bandipora also ordered the suspension of classwork in all low-lying schools of Bandipora as a precautionary measure for the safety of students. Class work also remained suspended in all educational institutions up to the higher secondary level falling under the jurisdiction of sub-division Kangan of Ganderbal and Uri area of Baramulla district.

Besides the schools getting inundated and submerged, various educational institutions in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have been cut off due to the sinking of roads and landslides caused by the incessant rainfall. “Various schools are cut off in some upper reaches of Baramulla district. The road has caved in and at some spots, the landslides and felling of trees have blocked the roads,” an official said. Meanwhile, the University of Kashmir (KU) postponed all its examinations which were scheduled for April 30.

“It is notified for the information of all the concerned candidates that all the examinations at the University of Kashmir, which were scheduled to be held on April 30 stand postponed. The fresh dates of the postponed exams will be issued soon,” reads a notification issued by the Assistant Controller of Examination, KU.

The KU authorities also ordered the suspension of classwork at the main Hazratbal campus and all its satellite campuses as well. “Given the inclement weather prevailing in Kashmir, the class work in the main and satellite campuses of the university will remain suspended on April 30,” reads an order issued by Registrar KU, Prof Naseer Iqbal.
