Baramulla, Apr 29: The incessant rains across north Kashmir’s Baramulla district damaged six residential houses while landslides caused by uninterrupted rains triggered landslides that left over a dozen villages disconnected from the Baramulla district headquarters on Monday.
In Baramulla, two persons had a narrow escape after landslides hit a major portion of the Baramulla-Baba Reshi road at Cheradari Baramulla on Monday.
The timely intervention of the locals saved both the persons, however, the landslides caused damage to a residential house.
Following the damage to the road, the movement of traffic on the road has been blocked and over a dozen villages of Kandi Baramulla remain disconnected with the district headquarters on Monday.
Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, along with a team of officials visited the area and assured the locals of all the help from the district administration.
He assured the people that the work on the road restoration would be soon started once the weather improves.
He also ordered the immediate shifting of inmates of some residential houses, anticipating the threat following the landslide in the area. In the Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district two persons were injured after shooting stones hit them near the NS Bridge.
The injured persons have been identified as Nazir Ahmad and Mushtaq Ahmad, both residents of Garkote, Uri.
One of the injured persons was shifted to the Government Medical College and Associate Hospital (GMC&AH), Baramulla.
The area also received snowfall on Monday in the upper reaches. Besides, a hailstorm was witnessed at several places causing massive damage to the crop.
In Bujthala Boniyar, a residential house collapsed on Monday evening and seven family members came under the rubble of the house. Soon after the incident, locals along with the J&K Police launched a rescue operation and evacuated all the family members from the collapsed house.
An official said that all the family members were safe.
He said that a few of them suffered minor injuries but all were safe. Meanwhile, incessant rains triggered landslides at several places in the upper reaches of the Uri area. Following the landslides at least three residential houses suffered damage at Darra Gutliya and Choolan.
An official said that six families had been shifted to safer places from different areas of the Uri area on Monday.
He said that there was an imminent threat to these residential houses following the landslides in the area.
“So the inmates of these houses were shifted to safer places,” the official said. Following the landslides triggered by the incessant rains, over a dozen villages in Uri were disconnected from the main town of Uri on Monday.
These villages include Nambla, Hathlanga, Churanda, Batgra, Tilawari, Thajal, Sukhdara, Upper Garkote, Salamabad Dachna, Nawarunda, and Darakunjan.
An official said that the local administration was working tirelessly to restore road connectivity.
“With the improvement in weather, the road connectivity in the affected areas will be restored,” he said.
In the Namblan area of Narwaw, landslides hit the area on Monday morning. Following the landslide, the vehicles remained blocked in the area and there was no traffic movement.
Meanwhile, there is panic in landslide-prone areas of Shirpora, Khodpora, Gohan, Walraman, Lateefabad, Kawhar, Galibal Road, and Kandi areas of Baramulla.
Several roads in these areas have caved in and locals here are facing severe hardships.
In the past too, the area has witnessed massive landslides which caused damage to scores of the residential houses.
Fayaz Ahmad of Shirpora Kandi, Baramulla, said that following incessant rains, several roads had suffered damage while at some places huge cracks had developed on the land which includes orchards, causing a concern among the locals.
“Several houses here have already been damaged due to the land displacement. If the weather conditions do not improve, then there is an imminent threat to the lives of the people besides the property. The administration needs to monitor the situation closely so that if the need arises, people of the affected villages are shifted to safer places,” said Fayaz Ahmad.
Meanwhile, there is no respite from the incessant rains across the Baramulla district. In the low-lying areas of the Baramulla district, scores of villages had been inundated with rain water and people of the area were facing severe hardships.
The affected villages include Janbazpora, Chakla, Jahama, Kanispora Baramulla, Hygam, Hamray Pattan, Hanjiveera Pattan, and Haritrath area.
